One way I've increased rigor in my classroom since the last iInspire meeting is by responding to students' questions with another question. It is so easy to get into the habit of telling them the answer, especially if it seems like they've really tried but just can't get there. By asking another question, it helps them but doesn't GIVE the answer to them. It is a lot harder for both parties, but definitely increases rigor in the classroom!
New Engagement Strategy
I used the Stop & Think activity with my sophomores reading Much Ado About Nothing. I pulled important quotes from the text and made them answer questions about each one concerning the literary devices within, what it was saying, etc. Students were engaged throughout the reading, anticipating where the next "stop" would be.
